HVAC SEO Keywords, by Job and by Intent

Every HVAC search a homeowner types is one of about a hundred phrases. Here they are, grouped the way the work is grouped on your trucks, with the volume, the intent, and the page that should own each one.

An HVAC technician crouched beside a condenser with a tablet, a white van at the curb of a suburban street.

Every HVAC search a homeowner types is one of about a hundred phrases, and most HVAC websites are built to rank for none of them. The site has a Services page that says heating and cooling, a homepage that says comfort, and a footer with 30 town names. The homeowner typed “ac not blowing cold air” or “furnace repair near me,” and the page that matched those exact words belongs to a competitor or a lead broker.

This is the list. It is grouped the way the work is grouped on your trucks: AC repair, AC replacement, furnace, heat pump, maintenance, duct work, indoor air quality, commercial, and the emergency calls that cut across all of them. Each keyword has a volume band, the intent behind it, and the page on your site that should own it. Volumes are US monthly searches from Ahrefs, October 2026, rounded to bands. Your town's share is a fraction of the national number, but the shape of the list, which phrases are big and which are small, holds everywhere.

How to read the list

  • Bands, not exact numbers. Under 1K, 1K to 5K, 5K to 20K, 20K to 50K, 50K to 100K, and 100K+. Ahrefs and Google disagree with each other month to month, and the exact figure does not change what you build.
  • “Near me” is not a separate page. When a homeowner adds “near me” or a town name, Google treats it as the same job with a location attached. The phrase without “near me” goes in the service page title; the town goes in the town page title. Nobody needs an “AC repair near me” page.
  • Intent. Emergency means the system is down and the homeowner is calling today. Planned means weeks of comparing, estimates, and financing. Commercial means a building manager or a property company. Informational means they are learning and not yet hiring.
  • Page types. A service page is one page per job, in the main navigation. A town page is one per town you want work in. A guide is a cost or how-to page that answers one question thoroughly. An FAQ is a question and a short answer on the matching service page, not a page of its own.

Emergency HVAC keywords: the calls you want today

These are the phrases typed at 9 p.m. in July or on the first freezing morning. They convert on the first ring and they carry the highest ad prices in the trade: Ahrefs lists the cost per click on “emergency ac repair” at more than ten times the click on plain “ac repair.” A shop that ranks for these organically is skipping that bill.

One rule: do not write “24 hour” or “emergency” on a page unless someone answers at 2 a.m. The homeowner who calls and gets voicemail leaves the review that costs you the next hundred calls.

AC repair keywords

ac repair cost1K to 5KPlannedGuide: what AC repair costs

Two things to notice. The matching-terms report for “ac repair” is full of car AC repair at 20K+ a month; those searches are not yours and a page that chases them wastes the title. And the symptom phrases, “ac not cooling,” “ac not blowing cold air,” are what a homeowner types before they type “ac repair.” Put each one on the AC repair page as a question heading with a two-sentence answer and the phone number under it.

AC replacement and installation keywords

Every cost phrase in this group is owned by one guide, written from your own jobs as ranges, with the things that move the number: tonnage, efficiency rating, ductwork condition, whether the furnace goes at the same time. That one page does more replacement work than ten pages that say “call for a quote.”

“Heater” and “furnace” are the same call from two different homeowners. In the South the word is heater; up north it is furnace. Use both on the page and in the title. And ignore the junk the furnace report drags in: a video game has a blast furnace that outsearches most real heating terms, and there is a film with furnace in the title. Neither is a lead.

Heat pump and mini split keywords

Heat pump repair at 50K to 100K a month is the most under-built page in the trade. Most HVAC sites mention heat pumps in a sentence on the AC page. A company that installs them should have a page that says so in the title, and the heat-pump-or-furnace guide is the one informational page in this list that turns into replacement estimates.

Maintenance plan keywords

Homeowners search “tune up,” not “maintenance agreement.” The page sells the plan, but the title says AC tune up and furnace tune up, with the plan price and what each visit includes. These searches peak in the shoulder months, which is exactly when the calendar is empty.

Duct work keywords

Duct cleaning is the biggest search group most HVAC companies ignore, because the margin is thin and the market is full of coupon operators. If you do it, one honest page that says when it helps and when it does not will outrank the coupon sites over time. If you do not do it, skip the group entirely rather than ranking for work you turn away.

Indoor air quality keywords

Commercial HVAC keywords

Commercial searches are small and the buyer is different: a property manager with six buildings who wants a maintenance contract and a response time in writing. One page, with the building types you service, the brands you are certified on, and a line about after-hours response, is enough. Residential pages do not need to mention commercial at all.

Company keywords: the homepage and the map pack

hvac contractor20K to 50KPlannedHomepage

These are the biggest numbers on the page and the hardest to win, because every HVAC company in the country wants them and the result is mostly the map pack. The homepage title carries “HVAC” plus your main town; the map pack is won by the Google Business Profile, reviews, and proximity, not by a page. The service pages above are where a small company actually ranks.

Informational keywords worth a guide

seer rating5K to 20KInformationalGuide: what a new system costs
how long do ac units last1K to 5KInformationalFAQ on the AC replacement page

Informational keywords do not ring the phone this week. They do two other things: they earn links from local news and real estate agents, and they are the pages AI assistants quote when a homeowner asks what a new system should cost. Three guides cover the whole list: what a new system costs, heat pump or furnace, and what AC repair costs. Skip “what is hvac” and “hvac meaning,” which are students and job seekers, and skip “hvac salary” and “hvac apprenticeship” unless the page is a careers page.

How to turn this list into pages

A keyword list is worth the pages it becomes and nothing else. Here is the order, and it is the same order whether you build it yourself or hand it to someone.

  1. One service page per group above. AC repair, AC replacement, furnace repair, furnace replacement, heat pump, mini split, maintenance plan, duct cleaning, ductwork, indoor air quality, commercial, and emergency service. Each takes the biggest keyword in its group as the title, with your main town after it. The HVAC website design guide covers what goes on each page and how it should read on a phone.
  2. The FAQ rows go on the matching service page. Question as a heading, answer in two sentences, phone number under it. “Furnace not igniting” on the furnace repair page, not on a blog.
  3. Town pages for the places you want more work in. Each one links to every service page, names the neighborhoods, and carries reviews from that town. Six real pages beat forty with the name swapped; Google treats the forty as doorway pages.
  4. Three guides. What a new system costs, heat pump or furnace, and what AC repair costs, each written from your own jobs as ranges. These own every cost and comparison row in the list.
  5. Publish eight weeks before the season. A page that goes live in April can rank by July. The HVAC lead generation guide has the pre-season calendar.
  6. Measure calls, not rankings. Search Console shows which of these phrases your pages appear for. Call tracking shows which ones booked. Rankings are a leading sign, booked jobs are the result.

If you would rather hand the list over: our HVAC SEO service runs this month to month, the service pages, the town pages, the guides, the profile and reviews, with a monthly check of whether AI assistants name you. If the site itself is the problem, HVAC website design is the build that starts with this list and ships a page for every row that applies to you. Both are quoted in writing before anything starts, and you own the domain, the site, and every page we build.

What to do this week

Open your site and count the pages that have one of the keywords above in the title. If the answer is one or two, you have found the problem. Pick the group that matches the season coming at you, AC repair in spring or furnace repair in fall, and write that page first: the main keyword in the title, the symptom questions as headings, a price range, and the phone number. One real page beats a redesign you will not start.

Questions people ask

What are the best HVAC keywords?

The highest-volume HVAC keywords in the US are “ac repair,” “furnace repair,” “hvac service,” “hvac near me,” and “air duct cleaning service,” each over 100,000 searches a month in Ahrefs as of October 2026. For a local company the best keywords are those same job names with a town attached, plus the symptom phrases a homeowner types before they search for a repair, such as “ac not cooling” and “furnace blowing cold air,” which have little competition and convert on the first call.

How many HVAC keywords should a website target?

About one main keyword per page, across ten to twelve service pages, a town page for each town you want work in, and two or three guides. An AC repair page targets “ac repair” and absorbs “air conditioning repair,” “ac not cooling,” and “emergency ac repair” as sections. Trying to rank one Services page for a hundred phrases ranks it for none; a page per job is how a small HVAC company outranks a larger one.

Do I need a separate page for “ac repair near me”?

No. Google treats “near me” as the searcher's location, not as a different topic, so a page titled “AC Repair Near Me” competes with your own AC repair page and reads oddly to a homeowner. Put “AC repair” in the service page title with your main town after it, build a town page for each additional town you serve, and let the Google Business Profile carry the map pack, which is where most “near me” searches actually end.

Which HVAC keywords are emergency keywords?

Any phrase with “emergency,” “24 hour,” or “same day” in it, and any symptom phrase such as “ac not blowing cold air,” “furnace not igniting,” or “heat pump not heating.” Together they run well over 100,000 US searches a month in Ahrefs, they convert on the first ring, and they carry the highest ad prices in the trade. They belong at the top of the matching repair page with the phone number, and only promise 24-hour service if someone truly answers.
